Delta State University’s “Fighting Okra”
The Fighting Okra is the mascot that stands behind the official “Statesman”. The okra was brought out because the official mascot did not have that mean image the school wanted. Why an okra? Because people are known to fear this vegetable and totally avoid it. This prompted the mascot to promote the vegetable on no less than the Food Network. Nothing can be meaner than appearing on the same channel where some of the best chefs in the world cook.
