After the rules were standardized, kendama play surged in popularity as a competitive sport. Additionally, an Award from the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology was given to the winner of the biggest kendama competitions for primary school students. Nowadays, there are tournaments for students and adults held around Japan, and enthusiasts are trying to make kendama popular overseas. The Japan Kendama Association aims to make the game more popular worldwide, and it has made efforts for international exchange with players from other countries.
